Ice Cream Scoop

Ice Cream Scoop Sometimes, that generic supermarket brand just doesn't cut it. Even Häagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry's can't compare to the real thing--rich, fresh, homemade ice cream.

When making ice cream at home, ice cream machines with self-contained electric freezers are essential for maximum efficiency and quality. You'll also need a tall, heavy saucepan that prevents scorching and a fine-mesh strainer to keep you ice cream as smooth as possible.

For those who like something on the lighter side, sorbets and granitas--both mixtures of pureed fruit, sugar and water--will keep you cool without the dairy (and the fat). Because they're usually processed in an ice cream maker, sorbets have a smoother texture. Granitas don't require any special equipment beyond a refrigerator freezer, but they must be stirred occasionally during freezing to create coarse ice crystals--hence their name, which derives from the Italian word for "grain."

Try our recipes for ice creams, sorbets and granitas, along with ice cream fixings. And take things one step further with recipes to put that ice cream to good use--sundaes, shakes and pies. You'll certainly be screaming for more.
